After Ukraine’s landslide win at the 66th Eurovision Song Contest, questions have arisen over which country will host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest…
It is expected that Ukraine’s broadcaster, UA:PBC, won’t be able to stage the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, especially in light of the event becoming a high-profile target, if Ukraine were to stage.
The European Broadcasting Union have begun negotiations with UA:PBC about the next contest, with the consensus being that UA:PBC will co-produce the Eurovision 2023 with another participating broadcaster. This could mean that while Eurovision 2023 may not be in Ukraine, it will look and feel very Ukrainian, perhaps with a Ukrainian presenter and Ukrainian themed interval acts.
So far, several broadcasters from across Europe have expressed an interest in hosting the next contest. These include Poland’s TVP, Spain’s RTVE, Sweden’s SVT, Iceland RÚV and Italy’s Rai, who hosted this year’s contest. However, it is logically expected that the EBU will extend the invitation to host to the BBC, from the United Kingdom, as they came 2nd place in the contest. The BBC have, informally, declared their desire to host the 2023 contest, as well, so a BBC/UA:PBC co-production does seem likely.
Whatever Martin Österdahl and the European Broadcasting Union decide, Eurovision 2023 is very unlikely to be hosted in Kyiv, and especially, Mariupol, as President Zelenskyy, somewhat optimistically, wishes.
More details are expected to be announced in the coming days and weeks.
