Dutch Duo Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper, with a Duncan Laurence penned song, to Eurovision 2023

Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper will represent the Netherlands at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, with a song penned by Duncan Laurence.

AVROTROS has announced that Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper will be the Netherlands’ representative at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool, next May. It will be the first time since 2014, when they came 2nd place in Copenhagen, that the nation has sent a duo.

It has also been announced that 2019 winner, Duncan Laurence, is one of the writers behind not just the track but also the duo themselves. Duncan Laurence, and his fiancee, Jordan Garfield, paired up Nicolai and Cooper as a duet in 2020, and they have worked closely with the pair ever since.

The Eurovision Song Contest is the place where people can see what you have to offer as an artist. After all these years of hard work, translating our feelings into music, this is a great opportunity to tell our story on such a large scale. It feels fantastic and a little unreal that the AVROTROS selection committee has chosen our song, but we’re ready to share something really positive with Europe.’

Investigative work already done by Eurovision fans in the minutes after the announcement has shown that Nicolai, Cooper, Laurence and Garfield all have a registered song writing credit in the GEMA database for a song called Chasing Highs, which could very well be the Dutch entry in Liverpool. However, all four are known collaborators so it could be something else.

If Chasing Highs is indeed the title, it has been suggested the song might be a lot more upbeat than Arcade and more in-line with Laurence’s recent release WDIA with Rosa Linn.

While we have this artist news very early, the Netherlands are usually one of the very last countries to release their song, so don’t expect anymore news on this until the second week of March.

  1. The Boy Who Holds The Keys

It’s rare for the artist announcement to excite me, but this one does. Dutch male-female duo once again, after the last one proved absolutely splendid, with the recommendation and songwriting skill of former winner? And it’s not even gonna be that dark? What can possibly go wrong? 2023 contest is officially starting.
