Oklahoma have won the inaugural edition of the American Song Contest, after a dramatic live Grand Final.
AleXa won with her song Wonderland, a Korean take on Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland. Oklahoma reached a total of 710 points, with 654 points from the Public Vote and 56 points from the Jury Vote. Colorado came 2nd with 503 points.
While several big names, such as Macy Gray, Jewel and Sisqó, had failed to qualify, Michael Bolton did manage to reach the final, although he found himself coming in just 7th place. Jury winner Washington, one of the hot favourites to win, only managed 5th place, overall. Tennessee, who came 2nd in the juries, came last.
The American Song Contest was hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg, from California, and was broadcast by NBC. Christer Björkman, the man behind Melodifestivalen from 2002-2021, was an executive producer on the contest, and filled in Martin Österdahl’s in the final, with his own original catchphrase “Make It Happen” to open the voting.
No news on a 2023 contest has been announced yet.
